comments: I visited Sabina a number of times in the late 1950's and considered moving there to attend Wilmington College but decided on the USMC instead.

Eugene was a famous figure back then, especially at Halloween. He often appeared on the front porches of homes (with a little help from his friends) and terrorized more than a few houses.

Some of his fingers were missing but he was kept well dressed in his black suit and had a rather serene look of composure on his face. I used to spend a few minutes of each visit talking to him and asking him questions like where he came from and if he had a family. As expected, no communication was established but I did attempt to comfort him with a prayer for his soul and his loved ones at the end of each visit.

Sabina is a delightful town that I have visited since and can well understand the loyalty and allocades it receives from its current and former citizens.

comments: My husband's Grandmother was Marie Trimble, who died in 1989. We'd love to talk to anyone who knew anything about her or her adopted daughter Clara, or Clara's daughter Lynda. Marie lived in a small house by the railroad tracks.

We're currently living in Wilmington and can be found in the phonebook under Kennedy Consulting.

Thanks for maintaining such a lovely website.

I am inquiring about imformation concerning ablack man that the town nicknamed "Eugene" many years ago.If I remember correctly, he was found frozen to death and no-one claimed the body. Is there any way to obtain a copy of this newspaper clipping of when he was found until he was buried in the Sabina cemetery? I'm trying to gather imformation for my grandchildren who are very interested in true stories from my childhood and I thought this would be a great one. Thank you, Joyce Naeyaert My E-mail address is......joyanabell@yahoo.com.

comments: I lived in Sabina from 1945 till 1949 when we moved to California. I lived in the big white house across the street from the school. My family owned King Kash Furniture Store in Sabina. We were the Wickensimers, Ralph and Mary Gibson my Aunt and Uncle. I love Sabina, right before we moved to Ca. we lived in a small house on the corner of the 3C highway and the street where Littleton Funeral was located. Needless to say I visited Eugene all the time. Before he was behind the screen when you could touch him. How scary that was. You all don't remember me but I do remember all of you and the town. comments: I just recently moved to Sabina. It is a wonderful, quaint, small town. I was born and raised in Blanchester, similar to Sabina. I just recently learned of "EUGENE" from my mother that used to come to Sabina with my father in the 1950's and 1960's. I had never heard of Eugene before Saturday Apri 3, 2004. I went onto the internet and found the website that talked about Eugene. Its the most fascinating story I have ever heard. Then I came across the Historical Wesbite of Sabina, you guys have done a wonderful job. Thank you for the knowledge of Sabina. Its great knowing that this little town is, was and always will be "the eden" of Ohio. I totally enjoy this website and living in this town!

comments: My mother is Mary Ellen (Dakin) Benson. She lived for many years in Sabina, and in the 50's & 60'S, our family used to travel there from New Jersey every summer to visit with the Dakins. We were in Sabina in November 2003, and it was great to see the town & meet with family again. I found this website by looking (once again) for information on Eugene, whom I had 'visited' several times in the little house where he rested. I have always wanted to know more of Eugene's story, people have always thought it too fantastic to be true.

Mom will be so excited to learn of this website; she loves Sabina, and can tell many stories about it. She is related to Barth Littleton and to Sara Rose (and many others). Perhaps she can respond to some of the requests I've seen here today.

GREAT SITE!!

comments: I taught at Lees Creek HS (later East Clinton HS) from 1958 to 1978. Originally we, the Baileys (Joyce, Fairel, Barry, & Vicki) lived in the big white house at 155 Washington Street. Loved going to church at Sabina Methodist and the Sabina pool. Later we moved out to Rolling Acres (close to Reesville) and stayed there until Vicki & Barry graduated from ECHS & Fairel retired from teaching.

We miss everyone in Reesville & try to take an annual summer trip through town stopping at the Frosty Freeze.

comments: I would like to read a full reminiscence of the "Eugene" story beginning when he was found along the road in or about 1923, embalmed by the local Funeral Home, and stored for claiming by next of kin --- which never happened. Then, how he was displayed by the Funeral Home for 50 more years as an advertisement for good embalming, stolen by the OSU student pranksters in either the late 70's or early 80's and then the final prank to be hung from a flag pole at the OSU campus. I believe there was enough pressure for final below ground interment for "Eugene", and he was buried somewhere. Quite a story for a small town, but nevertheless, you will be remembered for this for a long, long time. You did the right thing in the end. Hurray for Sabina, Ohio.

comments: This is a very interesting site! I enjoyed reading the comments of others who have found this connection to Sabina!

I was born and raised in a suburb of Sabina....Melvin! As a kid when we went to "Town" it was Sabina. I got my first haircut in Sabina by Vern Day and loved to go to Cecil's "five and dime" store, and for back to school clothes we went to Foster's where we were taken care of by Homer Fannin. It was a booming place with Gibbs and Fairley hardware stores, Thompson's and Zimmerman,s markets, Nunn's frozen food locker, Stackhouses Standard Oil station, and heaven forbid, a visit to Doc Weade!

My mom and dad (Mary & J.Raymond)lived out the last 20+ years of their lives in Sabina and I always enjoyed visiting them and coming back to my roots. Keep up the good work and I will tune in periodically for some entertaining information! wicktipp@yahoo.com
