location: Otis, Oregoncomments: My Great Great Grandfather, Benjamin Miley, and his son, Amma Miley and family lived in Clinton County. Both men were farmers.
Benjamin died in Washington Township on January 15, 1915. Mr. White was the undertaker and the body was taken to Martinsville, Ohio. Where is Martinsville?
Amma Miley died in the village of Sabina, Clinton County, on June 24, 1937. It appears as if the funeral director was a Mr. H. Littleton.

location: Freeport, NYcomments: I hope Gary Kersey is still going great guns. I hate to call him at the office. He was the Babe Ruth of my teenage years and beyond. These days he resembles a leaner more serene scholar but I'm sure the spirit is still intact. Just checking. Thanks.

Visitor Name: Betsy Niemann
Location: Wheaton, IL now Bend, ORcomments: I too have often searched for the story of "Eugene". My mother's family spent many years in Sabina, as my grandfather was there the day "Eugene" was discovered. As I have been to the Littleton Funeral Home for my mom's funeral, as well as her sister's, dad's and mother's, I was able to see the building made for Eugene. I was also advised at my mom's burial, that Eugene does have a plot at the cemetery, but not a headstone - as I was asking to see it.
The story of Eugene was told often by my grandpa, Eugene "Beanie" Dabe; however, his story stated Eugene was named after my grandpa!!! At my grandpa's funeral, I asked my grandpa's dear friend Terry Moore about Eugene. Months later Terry kindly sent me a photo of Eugene and 2 newspaper articles - one being from 1929 when Eugene was found and the other in 1964 when they had to finally bury him. I will be happy to send these to you...except, as I have moved across the country, I cannot find the actual picture, but only a photocopy - unfortunately. What a remarkable story...especially my grandpa's version!

Location: Yorktown, Indianacomments: My family and I were recently in Sabina finding the graves of my ancestors. They came from Maysville Ky. in 1850. Their name was Fristoe. My grandmother Mary [Mayme] Fristoe- Ellerman was born in Reesville 1871? Her grandparents owned and operated the hotel by the railroad tracks. Mary Anne Fristoe was her grandmothers name. Her parents names were Henry and Annie Dehaven Fristoe. I have been trying to locate their home in Sabina for several years. I think I know which one it is from my Father {Stanley Ellerman} pointing it our to me when I was a child. My Dad was born in Sabina in 1903, also his six brothers and sisters. His grandfather Henry Fristoe served in the Civil War from Sabina.
My grandmother Mary Fristoe Ellerman maternal's family were among the first families to settle Wilmington in the 1780's? Their names were Abraham Ellis and Jacob Strickle. If anyone reads this and has any info about my family history please email me. madcaner1@sbcglobal.net Thank you, Mary Anne Ellerman Young

Location: Milford, OHComments: Hello, About Eugene, the petrified man -- I went to Martinsville High School one year 1961-1962. That school year, several of my high school friends and I visited Eugene in Sabina a couple of times. He was resting in a coffin. He was a thin, black man of medium height. He was dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and tie. Someone said he was so stiff, his clothes were split down the back so they could be removed for occasional washing with a hose. No one knew how he came to be petrified. The story was he was found along the road near Wilmington, Ohio. I read a newspaper story years later that he had finally been buried.

Location: Woodland, CA.comments: I have visited the site many times and enjoyed each time.
I would like to see the mural that was being painted on the back of bank building. Can it be put on your site? As would be nice for those who are not able to come back to Sabina. Such a beautful painting. I wish it were out more in the public eye so people could enjoy it. Thanks to the one that painted the mural. You did a wonderful job.

Location: Originally Sabina, now Cincinnati
comments: I have nothing but great memories of growing up in Sabina. My grandparents Everett and Blanche Heston had a farm on Rt. 72. My parents (Noel and Nancy Heston) and I lived on South Howard. I married Ron Wright (whom I've known since kindergarten) and my mother-in-law Fern Wright still lives in Sabina. What I remember most about growing up in the 70's in Sabina was that everyone knew everyone else and that was a good thing. It could be a bad thing also. For example I wasn't supposed to cut through the field by the Smith's house to go to Sabina elementary but did one time. By the time I got home I was in trouble because one of my Mom's friends saw me and called my mom to report. Now living in Cincinnati, I miss the small town atmosphere where everybody know your name or at least your family or your ancestors. Great website. Keep up the good work!

I have often thought about Sabina but have never got the chance to go back. I remember Eugene and was so facinated by him that through out the years I have told my children, and grandchildren, and some day hopefully will be able to tell my great grand children, about him It is so good to see a website on Sabina, and I will be sure to visit often. THANK YOU

comments: Hi!
I am orginally from Sabina, where I grew up during the 60's. My mother Thelma Hubbard, still lives there. It was great seeing her on the website! I lived right down the street from the tiny building that housed Eugene. I must have visited him a thousand times and signed the guest log book. I remember Bill Gamble, but would love to hear more details about him, also a man called Elmer that pushed a cart, if I recall. I would love to hear from other people that I went to school with, especially Class of '65. Who is still with us and others that may have passed on. I miss Sabina, it has been several years since I have been there. Best wishes and hello!!! Nancy
